The following article details how to install the Knowbly plugin in D2L.
NOTE: To install the Knowbly plugin, you must have both admin access to D2L and an active Knowbly account.
Step 1: Create New Remote Plugin
Log into D2L as an administrator. Open the admin menu via the gear icon in the upper right, and select Remote Plugins. If you do not see this option, you may not have the admin permissions you need.
Click the New Remote Plugin button at the top of the remote plugin page.
This will open the page to configure your new remote plugin.
Step 2: Configure Remote Plugin
For Plugin Type pulldown, select Insert Stuff (CIM).
Fill out the rest of the configuration fields as follows:
- Name = Knowbly Universal Plugin
- Launch Point URL = https://knowblyuniversalplugin.com/d2l_lti_launch
- LTI Key and LTI Secret = You receive these from the Knowbly team. Please contact Knowbly support or your account manager to request a key and secret.
- OAuth Signature Method = HMAC-SHA256
- Description = A universal plugin to extend features and functionalities of knowbly to third party platforms.
- Icon URL (16x16) = https://knowblyuniversalplugin.com/albert16x16.png
Step 3: Add Plugin to your Org Units
Scroll down to the bottom of the configuration page, and click Add Org Units button.
This will open the screen where you can assign the plugin to specific courses and templates, in order to make the plugin visible to your authors.
You can use the search bar at the top to find a specific unit. You can also assign the plugin to that unit only or cascade down to the decedents.
Click the Insert button to add that org unit. It should now show at the bottom of the configuration page. Click Save to capture these changes. You can return to this page at any time to add the plugin to additional org units.
Step 4: Adjust Plugin Permissions
As a final step, you’ll want to adjust the permissions assigned to this Plugin (as a policy we do not request more information than the Plugin needs).
Open the admin menu via the gear icon in the upper right, and select External Learning Tools.
Click the Manage Tool Providers tab at the top of the page.
Scroll down or use your browser search to find “knowblyuniversalplugin.com”. There should only be one listed - if you have more than one, the plugin may already have been installed or you hit Save on the last step more than once. Click on the link to open the tool editor page.
Most of the configuration on this page has been set up in the previous steps, so there are only two things you need to check.
First, confirm the OAuth Signature Method is set to HMAC-SHA256.
Finally, scroll to the bottom of the page where you will find the Security Settings. The Knowbly plugin only requires that you check the first two boxes:
- Send tool consumer information to tool provider
- Send context information to tool provider
You can uncheck all other security settings as the Plugin does not require this information at this time.
Hit Save and Close to save these changes.
Step 5: Confirm Install
Your Plugin should now be ready for use! To confirm, go to any of the org units you added the Plugin to, open the editor, and click the Insert Stuff button.
You should see “knowbly universal plugin” in your list:
